Dear Newport School District Families and Community Members,
We have experienced winter weather events in recent years, but the most recent round of inclement weather has created a unique challenge as we work toward a safe return to school.
The first round of weather consisted primarily of snow and, under normal circumstances, would likely have resulted in only a couple of days out of school to allow for clearing. However, the second round of weather that moved in late Saturday and into Sunday was primarily sleet. Sleet generally creates much more hazardous travel conditions, and once it becomes compacted, it requires more sustained warmth to melt effectively. While we have seen higher temperatures, there has not been a significant amount of time above freezing to allow for meaningful clearing.
At this time, many of the main roads are in relatively good condition. However, side roads and roads in the more rural areas of our district remain in very poor shape. Any decisions regarding school operations must take into account the safety of our students and faculty above all else.
We fully understand the importance of having students back in the classroom for face-to-face instruction, consistency, and the meaningful connections that support both academic growth and overall well-being. We also recognize the value of extracurricular activities, teamwork, and the development of individual talents. Our desire is to return to both instruction and activities as soon as it is safe to do so.
When our school calendar was created, the district intentionally built in designated weather days. These days provide flexibility during situations like this while helping to minimize disruptions to instruction. If the number of missed days exceeds what is accounted for in the current calendar, additional minutes or days would need to be added to meet state requirements for official student seat time. Should that occur, there are several options that would be considered and brought to the Board of Education for approval before any decisions are finalized.
We understand the challenges these situations create for families and want you to know that these decisions are not made lightly. We truly appreciate your patience, understanding, and continued support during this time.
Our goal remains to return students to the classroom and resume extracurricular activities as soon as we can do so safely and responsibly. Please continue to watch for updates through our school website and social media platforms.
Thank you for your partnership and care as we navigate these conditions together.
Sincerely,
Jon Bradley
Superintendent
Newport School District
