CTE Spotlight--Computer Science

At Newport High School, we have an outstanding Career and Technical Education (CTE) program. We offer many opportunities for students to learn skills that they will carry with them outside of high school. One of these programs is Computer Science. Mrs. Samantha Aitkens teaches our computer science classes and is the sponsor of the TSA club.

"Our TSA chapter is preparing to attend our state conference in March where all 11 students will be competing in different competitions. We have teams involved with coding, video game design, fashion design and technology, forensic science, photographic technology and music production. Currently in my classes we are just wrapping up our networking and troubleshooting unit and starting to work in our robotics unit in the high school classes. They had to troubleshoot a printer and wireless router to apply the skills taught in the unit. With our robotics they have been working virtually with a robot to learn how to code to make the robot move, pick items up, navigate a maze and recognize colors. This code will translate into actually having to build a physical robot that has to complete tasks. We also just wrapped up our 2nd group of 7th graders and 8th graders. In their course the 7th graders were introduced to coding and learned the basic commands to create checkerboards, snowmen, caterpillars, and baseball diagrams. Our 8th graders completed a three unit coding class where they learned to code music, art and create a mini golf game using coding blocks." Ms. Aitkens
